School on Applied AI for Sustainable Development Workshop
From 23 to 27 March 2026, the workshop “School on Applied AI for Sustainable Development” took place in Trieste, Italy.
The School covered key aspects of Applied AI, focusing on the design, development, and deployment of practical solutions to real-world problems. It aimed to equip scientists, primarily from developing countries, to address local challenges and contribute to global sustainability goals.
Embedded devices running ML models have become increasingly powerful, marking a shift from Cloud-based AI to Edge AI. This transition has enabled the development of more complex, sustainable, and real-time AI solutions for applications such as environmental monitoring, particle detection and classification, radiation monitoring, smart agriculture, and waste management.
The School included hands-on exercises, group discussions, and case studies to reinforce key concepts. Participants were introduced to open-source methods, software tools, and hardware platforms relevant to real-world deployment.
The workshop received 459 applications from 70 different countries. From these, 42 participants were selected, representing 28 different nationalities.
